Learn to create some basic chainmail weaves! In 2 hours, we'll cover how to work with jump rings, how to create a 4-in-1 weave, then move on to other weaves like a spiral and box chain options as time allows.

Tools and supplies required:
2 sets of pliers
Jump rings
A closures (if making jewelry; this can be a hook, a lobster claw, or similar necklace closure)

Jump ring recommendations:

  • I typically recommend The Ring Lord for their selection and quality, but as orders from Canada are subject to tariffs, it's better to find them here in the US. Michael's, Fire Mountain, and Weave Got Maille are some reputable sources.
  • Aluminum is fairly easy to find, is cost-effective, and comes in a range of colors and finishes. Stainless or galvanized rings are best for armor.
  • 16, 18, or 20 gauge are great for basic jewelry. 16 or 14 gauge are best for armor.
  • Any color you like will do. As with many other materials, however, black may be difficult to see.
  • Do not get split rings. These work differently from jump rings and will make it much more difficult for you to learn the weave structures.

Plier recommendations:

  • If you are using jewelry-grade rings, get jewelry-grade pliers. Harbor Freight, Michael's, and Ben Franklin carry them.
  • If you are using armor-grade rings, pliers can be found at the hardware store. (You can put tape over the teeth to protect your rings or rasp the teeth down.)
  • I strongly recommend 1 square- or bull-nose pair of pliers and 1 needle-nose or bent-nose pair of pliers. You could also use 2 needle-nose or bent-nose pairs.
  • Please do not plan to use a ring-style jump-ring opener for your first class.

I have a couple of work lights we can use in class if needed. If you feel you may need magnification, feel free to bring it.

Classes can be held during the day or in the evenings, weekdays or weekends. Please contact me with timing preferences so we can get your class on the calendar.

Classes are best for ages 12 and up. Minors must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the class.
